How secure is your network and if asked can you prove it? We have written a lot over the past few months about different aspects of IT cyber security. But fundamentally, it all comes down to one thing, how secure is your network? I could ask this question to 20 IT Managers and get 20 different answers, so my next question to you guys. Can you prove your network is secure? IT Security is a science and covers many different layers.
The government has brought out Cyber Essentials as a baseline standard for businesses to follow. Unleashed, believe in Cyber Essentials to the point where, we have invested time and money to become Cyber Essentials consultants. However, we still believe it is not enough. IT departments around the country are looking at IT security as a ‘best endeavours’ policy without putting any real science behind it. We understand this, especially in the current economic climate and Unleashed would like to help you.
Network Vulnerability Testing
The only way to answer our question ‘how secure is your network?’ is to carry out vulnerability testing. A complete scan of your network assets will determine if everything is patched, has the correct level of software and is not transmitting anything back to an external source.
Unleashed only use industry standard professional scanning tools and for a short period, will scan 10 of your most important IP addresses for Free. Yes, I did say free, no catch, (the only caveat is you must have 10 IP addresses or more) we are here to help you and are prepared to put our money where our mouths are.
The scan will be setup and run with the full co-operation of your IT department. It will be carried out by one of our IT Security Consultants under the guidance of our MD. Who just happens to hold one of the highest IT security qualifications – CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional). To pass a CISSP exam you have months of study and then complete a 6-hour exam with 250 questions. This makes Unleashed fully qualified to work with your business.
Why should you do an external vulnerability test?
There are many good reasons to run a network vulnerability test and I have already highlighted a few. However, probably the most important reason of all, is the introduction of GDPR, which comes into effect in May 2018. GDPR will have far reaching implications for your business.
I don’t want to go into depth about GDPR in this article as I have written a lot about this previously and you read our idiots guide to GDPR at www.weareunleashed.com. In a nutshell, GDPR is about protecting personal information. As we all know a lot of personal information has been collected illegally by businesses being hacked. Now, as part of this new government legislation, if your data is breached you must report it within 72 hours. Or, face a fine of 4% of your revenue.
The second, really good reason and it comes back to my main question – How secure is your network and if asked can you prove it? Network vulnerability testing will 100% give you the answer – Yes, you can prove how good your security is. Whether that is yes, my IT security is very good or Yes, but I need work to do. At least you will know what work you need to do and put a good business case to your management for the money to do it.
We at Unleashed recognise that running an external security scanner on your network is scary stuff, not least what it will unearth. But, Unleashed, are here for you, to work with you and to keep cost down.
